The Heat is on – how hot is too hot for your computer

    by Brandon @ 6:25 pm on August 21, 2007

Seems like we’ve had an exceptionally hot summer in Boulder, CO/Denver, CO area this year and that always raises heat questions and troubles. This is a bit of a gray area because it’s not really directly an issue of room temperature, but rather processor/internal temperature. But here’s our take on it:

Optimal Room Temperature: Below 75 degrees

    Acceptable range: 76 – 84 degrees

Borderline (you may or may not have issues): 85 – 94 degrees

Not good (it’s a matter of time before you blow up): 95 degress +

Other things that can be done to alleviate heat issues:

    • Keep your innards clean — Get a can of compressed air and make sure you’re not overloaded with dust inside your system
    • Make sure your fans are spinning — Most systems have both a processor and power supply fan. Make sure they are both working
    • Keep away from direct sunlight
    • Make sure it’s well ventilated and not crammed into a desk cutout that is too small

Get free power Assessments for your Small Business in Boulder and Longmont

    by Derek @ 9:43 am on August 13, 2007

It is nice to see the trend in computing toward lower power consuming servers and better battery life in laptops, but if you’re interested in saving more, you’re in luck!  The city of Boulder’s Office of Environmental Affair is offering free services to small businesses.

Some of you may also find this device useful to find out where your power use is going.  I’ve found out that most of my computers take around 90 watts when in use and some even draw 10 watts when turned off but left plugged in!  I know now that I really need to unplug some devices.
