    Tape Backup

    by Brandon @ 8:08 pm on July 24, 2007

There are two things that every time we come across and replace we feel like we are making the world a better place.  The first is Windows ME (Microsoft’s flub of an OS around 2000).  The second is tape backups.  We’ve been called in multiple times to help a new client restore from a tape backup only to find that either the tape is completely blank due to it never being setup properly or the media is corrupt.

Tapes are a very similar media to your old VHS cassettes and remember how they start to get fuzzy and the tracking is way off after you’ve watched them over and over.  Same thing happens to your tape drive media.

My biggest complaint with tapes is that you cannot easily pop in a tape to check the contents.  In the event of a disaster, say your computer is sucked away in a tornado, you’d have to find the exact same tape drive hardware (better start ebaying), exact same software that created it, and then hope the tape is not corrupt.

To replace tape we use a USB external hard drive in conjunction with SyncBack software.  In the event of a meltdown data can be recovered via just about any computer with a drag and drop process.

If you’re still using tape, give us a call.  We’ll get you setup with a much better solution.

    Windows Update error 0x8024400E

    by Brandon @ 6:42 pm on July 19, 2007

For XP based computers running XP if you get error code 0x8024400E when running Windows Updates and Event ID 623 ESENT in your application log with this description (or similar):

wuaueng.dll (4032) SUS20ClientDataStore: The version store for this instance (0) has reached its maximum size of 8Mb. It is likely that a long-running transaction is preventing cleanup of the version store and causing it to build up in size. Updates will be rejected until the long-running transaction has been completely committed or rolled back.

    Possible long-running transaction:

    SessionId: 0x023E0320

    Session-context: 0×00000000

    Session-context ThreadId: 0x00000A04

Rename the %systemroot%\system32\SoftwareDistribution\DataSource folder to Datasource.old

Use unlocker if it reports that files are in use (Unlocker)

    Then run Windows Update again.

    High Altitude Printing?

    by Brandon @ 3:25 pm on July 17, 2007

This was a new one for us at RMTT. We recently purchased an entry level Color Laserjet printer (the Samsung CLP-300) as soon as we pulled it out of the box and sent our first test page, the paper was littered with horizontal toner lines. We tried the usual suspects (reseating the developer unit, taking a can of compressed air to the unit, cleaning the rollers with a mild cleaner, etc) and nothing worked. We called Samsung support and they were stumped, so they sent out a new developer unit. Upon arrival, the new unit was worse that the first.

Finally the solution was discovered. Samsung printers have a high altitude setting! You must install the Samsung utility and go into printer setting, then set the altitude setting to highest. A strange fix, but that was the solution

    Thunder, Bolts of Lightening

    by Brandon @ 3:17 pm on July 17, 2007

Around this time of year in Colorado we always get calls from customers who are experiencing power related issues.  Some of the most common things we see are computers being turned off (and not allowing your Remote Desktop session to connect), backups failing because the external drive is powered off, and a battery backups with dead batteries.

Now’s a good time of year to schedule a Battery Backup Audit where we can come out and test your Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) or if you don’t have a battery backup shoot an email to bhamilton@rmtechteam.com for best pricing.
